F*ck being right. Let's be us.
“I say f*ck being right. That’s what everyone else is doing. Let’s be us.”
Hi Huddle fam,
Tl;dr: Internally at Huddle, we have a channel where we share what we’ve learned during the week. Mike, one of our co-founders, took us through his learning of getting over the paradigm of making the “right vs wrong” decision, and instead, leaning into authenticity and curiosity.
Read his unedited message to our team below.
This learning is in the realm of leadership and life, more so than in the realm of business or startups.
I’ve been stuck for the last week or so in a “right vs. wrong” paradigm in many aspects of my life. What this means is that I’ve been judging outcomes, thinking that one choice was “better” than the others.
I made a shift yesterday when I remembered that THERE IS NO LEARNING that can POSSIBLY come from this lens of right vs. wrong. There is also very little satisfaction that can come from being right. When we’re right, what’s inevitably still there in the space is something that is wrong. Without wrong, there can be no right. So we’re playing a game that we cannot ever win, because we stay fighting against the wrong to be right, and our choices come from a place of fear of being wrong vs. a place of curiosity and learning.
When we drop right or wrong, we can start CREATING. We can be curious about outcomes. We can build things from a place of abundance vs. the thought that somehow our choices take something away from us, or from someone else.
The way I made this shift was thinking about choices as either authentic or inauthentic. I’m an analyst by trade and now an entrepreneur, and so it’s funny to write about making choices this way. But the effect is truly profound.
At Huddle, we have the very great privilege of building something from scratch. There is no right way to do this. There is only the way we choose to do it. What’s authentic to us? What actually feels good? How do YOU want to operate today? What would you personally feel proud of accomplishing here? What’s something big and dreamy you could achieve through work?
I say f*ck being right. That’s what everyone else is doing. Let’s be us.
This little learning this week had a big impact on me. Hoping by sharing this you get a little of that magic too 🪄
Until next time,
Diana
